Application:
The 31431971 inlet valve is installed in the cylinder heads of Perkins 3.3 L and 4.4 L engines built on the 1100-series platform, covering models 1103A-33, 1103B-33, 1103C-33, 1103D-33, 1104A-44, 1104C-44 and 1104D-44/44T/44TA. These engines power Massey Ferguson 5400-series and 6400-series tractors, Landini Rex and Legend orchard/vineyard tractors, McCormick CX and MC utility tractors, Caterpillar TH and TL telehandlers, JCB Loadall 531-70, 541-70, 536-60, Atlas-Copco QAS generators, FG Wilson P33-3 and P44-3 diesel generator sets, and a wide range of sweepers, compressors and material handlers. The valve meters clean air into the combustion chamber and, together with the matched 31431981 exhaust valve, controls swirl and heat rejection to meet Stage II/IIIA emission limits.

Overall length 114.1 mm, stem diameter 7.94 mm, head diameter 39.0 mm, 45° seat angle, dished head depth 2.4 mm, stem tip hardness 52 HRC, maximum run-out 0.02 mm. The valve is manufactured from 21-4N (X53CrMnNiN21-9) austenitic stainless steel that retains 750 MPa tensile strength at 850 °C; the seat face is plasma-welded with Stellite 6 to give a 1.2 mm thick layer, 48 HRC, providing triple the wear resistance of bare stainless. A manganese phosphate coating 3–5 µm thick on the stem reduces scuffing during the first 50 h and gives a coefficient of friction below 0.12 against the sintered-bronze guide.
Material & performance features:
The valve head is forged in one piece, then solution-treated at 1 100 °C and finish-machined on CNC centres to give a 0.8 µm Ra stem finish and 0.4 µm Ra seat finish. Induction hardening of the tip to 52 HRC prevents hammer wear from rocker arms running at 8 m/s contact speed. A continuous 0.05 mm chromium nitride diffusion layer applied by low-temperature salt-bath boosts scuff resistance on the stem while retaining toughness in the core.
