Application:

3174A016 is the outer valve spring fitted around both inlet and exhaust valves on 3- and 4-cylinder Perkins 1103/1104 diesels (3.3–4.4 L) as well as Caterpillar 3054C industrial engines. Typical installations include JCB 3CX/4CX back-hoe loaders, Case Maxxum tractors, 45 kVA “Vista A” generator sets and MF 1700-series farm tractors, where it maintains correct valve motion up to 3 000 min⁻¹ while meeting EU Stage IIIA / EPA Tier 4-final emission limits.

Technical specifications:

Free length 48 mm, outer diameter 29 mm, wire diameter 3.2 mm, 6 active coils, solid length 28 mm. Material is chrome-vanadium spring steel (50CrV4) oil-quenched and tempered to 47 HRC, then shot-peened to 0.25 mm A-intensity to raise fatigue life to 1 × 10⁷ cycles.

Material & performance features:

The 50CrV4 alloy (0.5 % C, 1 % Cr, 0.15 % V) offers 1 600 MPa tensile strength and 8 % elongation, resisting surge-set when exhaust temperature reaches 700 °C. Controlled shot-peening induces 400 MPa compressive stress on the outer surface, delaying fatigue crack initiation and extending service life to 12 000 h. Phosphate layer retains oil during cold starts, cutting initial scuffing by 20 %, while closed-and-ground ends keep squareness within 0.5 °, preventing valve head tilt and seal wear.
