Application:

The T408360 fuel relief valve is engineered for the 1103 and 1104 family of Perkins diesels – covering naturally-aspirated and turbocharged versions such as 1103A-33, 1103A-33T, 1103B-33, 1103B-33T, 1103C-33, 1103C-33T, 1103D-33, 1104A-44, 1104A-44T, 1104C-44, 1104C-44T and 1104D-44/44T/44TA. These engines are fitted to mid-range agricultural tractors, combine harvesters, forage choppers, material-handlers, 30–100 kVA diesel generator sets, lighting towers, compressors and industrial sweepers, so the valve is found in equipment built by Massey Ferguson, Landini, McCormick, Caterpillar, Terex, Atlas Copco, FG Wilson, Genpower and many others. Its function is to protect the low-pressure lift pump and the downstream fuel circuit: when cold-start waxing or a restricted return line causes pressure to rise above 5–6 bar, the valve opens instantly, dumping excess fuel back to tank and preventing seal or hose rupture while maintaining stable pressure at the injection pump inlet.


Technical specifications:

Body is a one-piece machined iron casting, 25 mm hex across flats, M14 × 1.5 male thread, 7 mm return spigot for 8 mm ID hose, overall height 28 mm, weight 100 g. Cracking (opening) pressure is calibrated at 5.2 bar ±0.3 bar; full flow is reached at 6 bar with a minimum return volume of 35 L/h at 20 °C. The internal spring is music-wire, zinc-phosphated for corrosion resistance, and the valve seat is lapped to 0.2 µm flatness to give drip-tight sealing below 4.5 bar.


Material & performance features:

High-strength grey cast iron body (ASTM A48 CL35B) gives 280 MPa tensile strength and 220 HB hardness, resisting cavitation erosion from modern high-flow lift pumps. The plunger and seat are gas-nitrided at 550 °C for 12 h, producing a 0.3 mm white layer (>850 HV surface hardness) that triples wear life compared with untreated surfaces.
