Application:

Valve Tappet 120116160 is machined for the 4-cylinder 403C-15, 403C-17, 404C-22 and 404C-22T families of Perkins diesels (2.2–2.8 L) that power compact agricultural tractors such as the Massey Ferguson 1700 E-series, Gehl SL4610 / SL4615 skid-steers, 50 Hz prime generators and small industrial sweepers. These engines run up to 2 800 min⁻¹, so the tappet is hardened to keep cam-follower contact stress below 1 700 MPa while maintaining a maximum 0.05 mm concave wear crown that preserves correct valve lash for the full 6 000 h overhaul interval.

overall length 30.0 mm, head diameter 22.0 mm, stem diameter 12.0 mm, cam-contact face radius 600 mm, mass 36 g. The body is drop-forged from 20CrMo steel (0.20 % C, 1.0 % Cr, 0.20 % Mo), through-hardened to 58 HRC at the crown and 45 HRC on the stem to resist brinelling under 12 kN spring load.

the 20CrMo alloy offers 900 MPa tensile strength and 12 % elongation, resisting impact fatigue when the cam lifts 9 mm at 30 g acceleration. Induction-hardened crown depth is 2.0 mm, delaying pitting beyond 8 000 h even when sulphated ash fuel is used. Phosphate layer retains oil during cold starts, cutting initial wear by 30 %, while the controlled 600 mm crown radius keeps Hertzian stress 15 % lower than flat followers, extending camshaft life accordingly.
