Application:

The 3342A011 valve spring cap, often called a “valve spring retainer,” is used on the 1103 and 1104 family of Perkins diesels—including the 1103A-33, 1103B-33, 1103C-33, 1103D-33, 1104A-44, 1104B-44, 1104C-44 and 1104D-44 engines that trace their architecture back to the 4.0-litre T4.236 and AT4.236 turbocharged platform. In practice you will find it clamped between the valve spring and the split cotters on Massey Ferguson 390, 398, 4700 and 5700 tractors, Landini Rex and Legend ranges, JCB 3CX/4CX back-hoes, Manitou MLT telehandlers, FG Wilson P27-P55 generator sets and a wide variety of mobile compressors and forklift trucks. Its sole job is to transfer the spring load evenly to the valve stem while keeping the two cotters firmly wedged, so the valve opens and closes exactly with the cam profile even after thousands of hours of high-speed operation.

Technical specifications:

Overall height 9.5 mm, outside diameter 28.0 mm, inside taper 14° included angle, stem clearance 8.0 +0.1/-0.0 mm, hardness 28-32 HRC after heat treatment, weight 28 g. The cap is machined from 080M46 medium-carbon steel, fully carburised to a case depth of 0.4-0.6 mm and then quenched and tempered to relieve stress.

Material & performance features:

The 080M46 core gives 600 MPa tensile strength while the carburised case provides a 750 HV micro-hardness wedge that resists hammer wear from the cotters, even when engines are run on low-cetane fuels with high combustion pressures. A final manganese phosphate coating adds 96 h salt-spray corrosion resistance and helps the cotters bed-in during the first hot run.
