Application:
The 2486A222 oil cooler is engineered for the Perkins T4.236 and AT4.236 turbo-charged four-cylinder diesel engines of 4.0 L swept volume, assemblies that power a broad spectrum of agricultural tractors (Massey Ferguson 3000, 3600 and 6100 series among others), combine harvesters, self-propelled forage equipment, mobile and stationary generator sets rated from 40 kVA up to 110 kVA, plus a wide variety of industrial machinery such as forklift trucks, skid-steer loaders and mobile compressors. In the field the cooler is also found on earlier 4.236 naturally-aspirated engines and the slightly later 4.248 derivatives when these engines are fitted in the same equipment lines, so its usage envelope extends across decades of production from the late 1980s to the mid-2000s.
Technical specifications:
The cooler is a 10-plate, donut-type heat exchanger built on a stainless-steel core to resist chloride attack from modern long-life coolants. Plate stack outside diameter is 98.48 mm, matching the machined recess in the cylinder block; overall height including sealing flange is 78 mm. Ten internal plates provide a nominal oil-side flow area of 380 cm², giving a heat-rejection capacity of 6 kW at 90 °C oil temperature and 75 °C coolant temperature under rated engine load. The pressed-steel shell carries two 3/4-16 UNF female oil ports on 38 mm centres and two 5/8-18 UNF female coolant ports on 63 mm centres, all ports fitted with O-ring boss sealing for leak-free service. Mounting is by four M8 threaded studs on a 60 mm pitch circle, torque 22 N·m.
Material & performance features:
The plate pack is furnace-brazed 304 stainless steel for maximum fatigue life under cyclic thermal loading; external shell is zinc-nickel passivated mild steel for corrosion resistance. Nitrile O-rings rated to 150 °C ensure long-term sealing against modern glycol-water mixtures. Internal turbulator inserts increase heat-transfer coefficient by 12 % over plain-plate designs while maintaining oil pressure drop below 0.4 bar at 80 °C. The assembly is 100 % pressure tested to 10 bar on both circuits and leak-tested with nitrogen to 5 × 10⁻³ mbar·l/s to guarantee reliability in continuous-duty applications.
